Wasted
by Kae Tempest
directed by Toby Clarke
produced by MICA Theatre
“You know what your problem is, mate? You just sit around, expecting life to happen for you. Waiting for it all to just land in your fuckin’ lap…“
Ten years on from the death of their best mate, Tony, three friends Danny, Charlotte, and Temi are all now in their mid-20s and confronted by the choices they did or didn’t make.
With a new perspective from Director Toby Clarke, Kae Tempest’s rapid-fire Wasted, is a play about friendship, South London’s stranglehold and the kind of dreams you’re too shit-scared to chase.
Wasted received its first performance in July 2011 at the Latitude Festival in a production by Paines Plough, Birmingham Repertory Theatre and The Roundhouse, and was subsequently revived in 2012 and 2013 as part of two Paines Plough national tours.

‘Wasted is a fast-paced, dynamic play, debuting MICA Theatre with a bang. A show that entertains and touches the audience from beginning to end… From the funny and lighthearted scenes of a club night, to the heart-wrenching moment of Tony’s death, all directorial decisions enhance an already brilliant script by Kae Tempest… it’s the most beautiful act of balance and ensemble I have ever seen on stage.’ ★★★★★ Always Time for Theatre
‘The energy is palpable… Tempest is a wordsmith extraordinaire. Like the physical setting, each act connects through the movement and poetic dialogue — almost like a rap. The storyline is in continuous flux as you follow the characters’ thoughts and conversations over the course of a day. The language is witty, descriptive, and in keeping with millennials… It’s an engaging and thought-provoking performance by all.’ ★★★★★ Everything Theatre
‘it is beautifully done. With TJ Roderick and Joseph Peck’s sound design and Rupert Cross’ compositions, a cracking energy is conjured – matched by the saturated hues of Pablo Fernandez Baz’s pitch-perfect lighting.’ ★★★★ There Ought to be Clowns
‘This is a very impressive first outing for MICA Theatre… Wasted is a bold, forthright and challenging production has excellent chemistry between the cast members and credibility in all they say. ‘ ★★★★ Broadway Baby
‘Wasted should be on the National Curriculum, it is a masterclass of youthful self-destruction which, like the best theatre, has the power to change lives.’ British Theatre Guide
