At its heart, Out of Bounds is a colourful and entertaining study of family life that explores cultural traditions and typical growing pains, but at the same time gives a clear picture of the discrimination and prejudice experienced by Lall and his contemporaries, adding an extra layer of danger and threat to the experiences of young people growing up in such a charged political climate. ‘Jason Sardinha gives a dazzling and assured performance in this play by Rajesh Gopie about a young South African Indian Lali Laichind coping with growing in in a suburb of Durban surrounded by his vast family during the apartheid years in the 1980s… Sardina conjures up Lali’s family of bullying uncles, an ineffectual father and the doting oppressed women perfectly and the simple set which manages to transform itself using back projections and a swift change of some simple props, adds to the impact.
